In line with the established national and international practices (“The framework of qualifications for the European Higher Education Area“) the degree of Doctor in TSI is granted to the candidates that show:

  • Own a large culture in the TSI field
  • Own deep knowledge in the field that fits the topic of doctorate work
  • Own skills the lead and execute, in a autonomous way (be it individually or integrated in a research team), research and investigation activities (R&D) covering the various aspects of the R%D process: review of the state of the art, project planning, selecting and applying research methods and procedures, writing reports with R&D results, etc
  • Have performed a contribution to the knowledge in the field where the doctorate’s work field fits. One of the fundamental aspects in the R&D activity is the publication of the respective results. Indeed, it doesn’t make sense to give a contribution to scientific or technologic knowledge if that contribution isn’t divulged to the community potentially interested in it. It is expected that a researcher knows how to write R&D articles and is familiarized with the revision process associated to the publication of these articles. On the other hand, the publication of R&D articles is in itself an evidence of the acceptance of the results by the community in which the researcher fits, since the review process is done before the publication, so that the originality of the results may be verified and its corrections due to the R&D procedures used. It is to also be mentioned that the main indicator to be used internationally to evaluate a researcher is the quantity and quality of his/her publications

Thus, it is also considered as a requisit to Grant the degree of doctor that the doctorate candidates in TSI have:

  • Published the results from R&D activities performed during their doctorate’s degree in conferences and research results divulging magazines that involve reviewing mechanisms by the research community where they fit
  • Besides the 5 requisites mentioned above, i tis considered to be expected that the doctors in TSI, graduated by Universidade do Minho, show a group of qualities that distinguish na excelente researcher

Therefore it is expected that the candidates show:

  • A good level of planning, execution and work management autonomy in R&D as well as in identifying the risks, limitations and benefits from diferent R&D approaches
  • Have critic sense relatively to their own R&D work and that of their peers
  • To have reflected on their R&D experience translated in critical appreciations and correction/improvement plans on the completed assignments and on the used R&D prctices
  • Have the ability to perceive a R&D program at the individual and/or institutional level

The doctorate’s program will try to also include activities that aim to stimulate the development of qualities that characterize the academic spirit, such as:

  • Will to socialize with other researchers
  • Sensitivity to the ethical questions of the Research job
  • Have and open mind to embrace new ideas and to explore innovative work clues
  • Motivation to participate in conferences and other R&D result presentation events
  • Interest in publishing the results of their R&D projects
