The available resources for use regarding the PDTSI are available from the resources belonging to the Information Systems Department and the Algoritmi R&D Center and also shared existing resources in the Universidade do Minho Campi.

Spaces and laboratories

PDTSI’s learning component does not demand special conditions. You have to consider the space needs to develop small group meetings or workshops. Spaces for these ends are either available to the DSI level (1 auditorium; 3 meeting rooms), or in regards to the shared teaching spaces, located in Universidade do Minho (amphitheaters, classrooms and meeting rooms) These spaces either already have with projection and communication means (per example, video conference) or such means may be requested.

Curricular units teaching may, occasionally, demand pedagogical labs equipped with computational means or other informatics equipment. The DSI offers for this purpose, 6 pedagogical labs equipped with diverse informatics means.

To the doctorate students is offered workspace, personal computer (even if the students have their own personal computer) and access to work stations, servers, press means and other informatics equipment. This work space is located in one of the 4 existing research labs. In these pedagogical labs, are available a total of about 50 personal computers and/or work stations.

Comunication and computational means

Doctorate students may use a computational infra-structure based in a group of servers that offers a group of means and services, such as: Internet access and eduroam network, FTP and SOCKS; e-mail service; storage zones; Web Housing and Publishing; Intranet; e-Learning.

Besides the existing software, shown in the following list, specific software for a project may be acquired.

Personal Productivity Software: Acrobat Reader; MS Office; MS Frontpage; Mozilla Firefoz; Winrar; among others
Research support Software (data treatment): SPSS; contente analysis tools; others
Communication Software: WS_Ftp; SSH; Exceed
Programming Software: Octave; Matlab R13; Liberty Basic; TurboC; Mathematica; Maple; Scilab; Cygwin; MinGW; MS Visual Studio; BlueJ; Java SDK; SWI-Prolog
Multimedia Software; Maya 5.0; Macromedia Studio; Adobe Premier; Adobe Photoshop; Soundforge; Sonic Record Now; Audacity; Samplitude

Other equipment

It is still available diverse equipment adequate for gathering and treating data associated to interviews and other ways of field studies: video cameras, sound recorders; statistic data and content analysis software (mentioned above).

Other means

Some doctorate assignments fit into financed projects at a national or European level, and thus, obtaining other means that may eventually be necessary. PDTSI students may also go to services and resources available in Universidade do Minho to use in their teaching projects. From such services the Documentation Services and the Universidade do Minho’s Communication Services (SCOM) stand out.

Universidade do Minho’s Documentation Services (SDUM)

Universidade do Minho offers a group of spaces for libraries (characterized in the table below), from which is worthy of mention the UM’s General Library (BGUM; 4000m2 and 354 reading spaces).

The libraries work in free access regime for the shelves and are open to all Universidade do Minho’s teachers, researchers, students and employees. Archives, libraries and documentation services and/or national information may also use the Universidade do Minho’s libraries, as long as they honor the respective collaboration contracts. People external to the University may also use the library through the creation of an appropriate card by the Documentation Services.

BGUM owns a bibliographic background that encompasses all knowledge fields, organized thematically, in accordance to the Universal Decimal Classification (CDU). The documental background is composed by various types of documents, namely, monographs, periodic publications, reference works and audiovisual documents. BPG (Guimarães’s pole) especially covers all Engineering fields, Population History, Geography and Arquitecture. The libraries also hold a special background, which gathers all the Universidade do Minho’s teachers, researchers and employee’s publications. Given their nature, it is under special reading restrictions.

The Documentation Services manage a group of information research services, indispensable to the support of research, teaching and learning activities, and they are:

Wi-Fi Network

Universidade do Minho, offer to all of its academic community, a wireless communication infra-structure, made up by diferente Wireless LAN’s (WLAN) instaled in Gualtar and Azurém’s campus, as well as in the Largo do Paço’s facilities and other places where students reside, sucj as the Academic Association and Residences. This network is supported by compatible equipment with the recent 802.11g norm, that supports debits up to 54 Mbps, maintaining the compatibility with the equipment prior to the 802.11b norm.
In practically every public place in the Universidade do Minho’s campus, is possible, resourcing to a laptop, equipped with a Wi-Fi NIC, to access a varied group of services and Web content offered by Universidade do Minho, as well as access to external services through the Internet. The implementation of this Wi-Fi network is according to the security, authentication, confidentiality and national mobility requisits defined by UMIC/FCCN for institutions participating in the e-U initiative. Any user from Universidade do Minho, visiting another higher education institution using the e-U, should have access to the local Wi-Fi network, maintain the access privileges that are offered at Universidade do Minho. In the same way, any user from another higher teaching institution using the e-U, visiting Universidade do Minho will see their local Wi-Fi network access assured, with the same level of privileges they hold in their institution.

Electronic Services

In the Electronic Services section of the e-U initiative, Universidade do Minho implements a group of services, directed at the members of its academic community, offered through the university portal, and from which stand out the following (besides those already mentioned, offered through the Documentation Services):
