Guimarães, cidade de origem medieval, tem as suas raízes no remoto século X e é considerada a cidade berço de Portugal, pois aqui nasceu Afonso Henriques que viria a ser o primeiro rei de Portugal. O concelho de Guimarães fica situado no Distrito de Braga e graças ao seu reconhecimento enquanto cidade Europeia do Desporto e as boas práticas ambientais, a cidade, em 2018, integrou a lista de candidatos ao galardão de Capital Verde Europeia 2020. Associado à formação e identidade portuguesas, o centro histórico de Guimarães, na zona que ficava dentro de muralhas, foi classificado Património Mundial pela UNESCO em 2001, com base nos valores de originalidade e autenticidade com que foi recuperado.
