To conduct research is to anticipate the future. I believe that information will become the fundamental factor of production. Yet, from a purely social perspective, the future we are heading toward remains uncertain, and the future role of people is still unclear. Nevertheless, I expect that the governance and management of enterprises and the governance and management of their information systems will converge. This convergence will increase the dependency on information systems. Combined with the current constraints enterprises face in keeping pace with technological change, this will intensify personal, business, and societal risks. As a result, systematic approaches to the research and practice of information systems will fall short. Therefore, systemic approaches must be fully embraced.
For this envisioned future, I position my research interests as follows:
(i) information systems governance decisions will shape the fabric of future society, the role of people, and the diffusion and infusion of information technology;
(ii) the information systems capability of enterprises will be the primary enabler of wealth creation;
(iii) the central concern of enterprises will be to protect the integrity of their information systems; and
(iv) the evaluation of information systems will become the principal interpreter of risks, forming the basis for managing complexity.

My main areas of interest include Deep Learning, Computer Vision, and Digital Image Processing. I’m also engaged in Distributed Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly edge computing applied to precision agriculture. I work on Data Synthesis and Engineering, as well as in Computer Graphics (CG), especially Procedural Modeling and Virtual Environments composition. Virtual and Augmented Reality are also part of my research scope. Still in the context of CG, I’ve been exploring Human-Computer Interaction. Bridging AI with CG is currently one of my main research directions.

My work in Mobile Computing centers on developing systems and services that maintain robust connectivity for mobile users (6G/5G, Wi-Fi, etc.). This involves tackling the challenges of wireless channels, user mobility, and heterogeneous networks. A key goal is to leverage user context (e.g., location, orientation) to provide guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS) and improve resource efficiency.
In the Internet of Things (IoT), my research explores how sensor and actuator devices can integrate the physical and digital worlds. IoT is a key enabler for applications like smart cities, Industry 4.0, and smart health. However, designing these solutions requires overcoming challenges in massive device deployment, heterogeneity, data volume, energy efficiency, and security. I have a particular interest in Smart Health and the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), using mobile and wearable devices for continuous health monitoring and management.
Given the constraints of IoT devices and the complexity of their applications, the Cloud-to-Edge Continuum emerges as a critical architectural paradigm. My research in this area focuses on orchestrating computational resources across this spectrum—from the compute power of the Cloud to the low-latency and data sovereignty guarantees of the Edge. The ultimate objective is to optimize performance metrics tailored to specific application needs.
Prospective PhD students interested in tackling these challenges are encouraged to reach out.
